What to check before buying a second-hand laptop
- Battery health. On Windows, run
powercfg /batteryreportand compare full-charge capacity with design capacity. On a Mac, check Battery in System Settings. - Screen. Look for dead pixels, lines, flicker and uneven backlight on a plain white and a plain black screen.
- Keyboard and trackpad. Type every key and try clicks and gestures.
- Ports and wireless. Test each USB port, HDMI, the charger port, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Hinges and body. Open and close the lid; it should hold its angle without wobble.
- Processor generation and storage. A newer-generation processor and an SSD matter more for speed than the i5/i7 label alone.
- Windows activation. Check Settings → Activation shows Windows is activated.
- Warranty in writing. Get the warranty length and what it covers on the invoice or quote.
