How chip-level diagnosis and repair works

Visual inspection
The board is checked under magnification for corrosion, burnt components and physical damage.
Power and short tests
The power rails are measured to find where the board fails, and any short is traced to the component causing it.

You get the fault and the cost before any work starts, and can compare it with a replacement board.
Component repair
The failed component is replaced, reworked or, for BIOS faults, the chip is reprogrammed.
Testing

Component repair or a new motherboard?

A component-level repair can cost less than a replacement board, because only the failed part is replaced.
For older laptops, a new board may no longer be available at all; repairing the original is often the only option.
Your storage stays where it is. On laptops whose storage is soldered to the board, such as many recent MacBooks, repairing the original board can be the way to reach your data again.
When a board cannot be repaired, for example after severe burns or a cracked board, we tell you after the diagnosis and quote the alternative.

After liquid damage: what to do first

Switch the device off and unplug the charger straight away.
Do not switch it on to check whether it still works: power on a wet board is what causes the worst damage.
Do not dry it with a hair dryer, in the sun or in rice; heat can harm components and rice does not reach under chips.
Bring it in as soon as you can. Corrosion keeps spreading on a wet board for days after the spill.
