Check your battery's health yourself
- Windows: open Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and open the report it saves. Compare Full charge capacity with Design capacity.
- MacBook: open System Settings, then Battery, then the information button next to Battery Health.
- As a rough guide, a battery far below its design capacity, or one that cuts out early, is due for replacement.
If the battery is swollen
- Stop using the laptop on battery and stop charging it.
- Do not press on the case or the trackpad, and do not puncture the battery.
- Keep it away from heat and from anything flammable.
- Bring it in as soon as you can: a swollen battery can damage the trackpad, keyboard and case as it grows.

Making a new battery last
- Avoid leaving the laptop in a hot car or on a soft surface that blocks the vents.
- Many laptops have a battery-care setting that stops charging at around 80%; turn it on if the laptop is mostly plugged in.
- Use the charger made for your laptop, or one with the correct wattage.
