What a laptop service includes
- Opening the laptop and cleaning dust from the fan, heatsink fins and air vents.
- Removing the old thermal paste and applying fresh paste on the processor and graphics chip; thermal pads replaced where the model uses them.
- Checking that the fan spins up correctly, and repairing or replacing it if it is worn.
- Cleaning the keyboard, ports and the inside of the case.
- A check of battery health and drive health, so you know about any other problem early.
- Testing the laptop under load after the service.
How often should a laptop be serviced?
As a rule of thumb, once every 12 to 18 months for a laptop used every day, and sooner if it sits on a bed or sofa, in a dusty room, or near a kitchen. Gaming laptops and workstations that run hot for hours benefit from more frequent servicing.
Between services: keep the vents clear, use the laptop on a hard, flat surface, and do not block the air intake underneath.
