Reuse first, then recycle

A laptop that still works, or can be repaired economically, is worth more reused than scrapped: it is graded, wiped and refurbished for resale.

Laptops that cannot be reused are recycled after their drives are wiped. List any non-working units in your asset list with their fault; how they are handled and priced is confirmed in your quote.

Clear, Purge or Destroy: what NIST SP 800-88 means

NIST Special Publication 800-88 sets out three levels of media sanitisation:

Clear: overwriting user data with standard commands, so it cannot be recovered with ordinary tools.
Purge: methods such as a drive's built-in secure erase or a cryptographic erase, which make recovery infeasible even with laboratory techniques.
Destroy: physically destroying the media, for example by shredding or disintegrating it.

What the certificate records for each laptop

The right method depends on the drive: hard disks and SSDs are handled differently, and a drive that fails to wipe is marked for destruction. One certificate covers the lot, with a row for every laptop:

Storage type and storage serial number
Wipe method (NIST SP 800-88)

Result of the wipe
