Formatting without losing your files

Formatting erases the drive, so the order matters: files first, then the installation. If the laptop still starts, or its drive can be read, we copy your documents, photos and desktop files before we format, and put them back afterwards.

Genuine Windows and licences

Most laptops sold with Windows have the licence stored in the firmware, and Windows activates itself again after a clean installation. If yours does not have a licence, we tell you before installing. Companies can also get Windows and Microsoft Office licences from us.

Companies setting up new or returned laptops need the same Windows build, programs and settings on every machine. We do that as a service: set-up for new employees, and wiping and re-issuing laptops when staff leave.

Questions about formatting and installation

Will formatting delete my files?

Formatting erases the drive, so we back up your files first wherever the laptop or its drive can be read, and restore them after the installation.

Do you install genuine Windows?

Yes. Most laptops re-activate their own licence after a clean installation. If there is no licence, we tell you before installing.

Can you install Linux or set up dual boot?

Yes: Linux, such as Ubuntu, on its own or alongside Windows.

Can you remove a virus without formatting?

Often, yes. If the infection has damaged Windows too badly, a clean installation is the safer fix; we tell you which applies.

Do you reinstall macOS?

Yes, on MacBooks, with your files backed up first where possible.

My laptop is slow. Is formatting the answer?

Sometimes. If the laptop has an old hard disk or overheats, an SSD upgrade or a service helps more. The free diagnosis tells you which.

Is there a warranty?

Yes: 1 month on the repair we carry out.
